The Sheffield Steelers have bolstered their defensive unit with the signing of Macoy Erkamps, a move that Head Coach Aaron Fox believes will bring a competitive edge and defensive reliability to the team's blue line. This addition comes as a strategic move to strengthen the team's performance for the upcoming 2026-27 Elite League season.
Erkamps, a 31-year-old Canadian defenceman, brings a wealth of experience to the Steelers. His journey in professional hockey began in North America, where he played 137 games in the American Hockey League (AHL) and 122 in the ECHL over six years. Prior to his European adventure, Erkamps honed his skills in Germany's DEL with the Iserlohn Roosters, making 41 appearances, and in Sweden's Allsvenskan, playing for both Västervik and AIK.
Fox's enthusiasm for Erkamps is evident in his comments, highlighting the player's competitive spirit and defensive prowess. "Macoy is coming in with a real appetite to win and plays with a willingness to do whatever it takes," Fox said. "He competes extremely hard and will fill a shutdown role against the opposition's top players."
The coach further praised Erkamps' skating ability, transition game skills, and defensive awareness, emphasizing his ability to read the game and support the attack when needed. "Macoy skates exceptionally well and will really help our transition game with clean exits and good reads through the neutral zone," Fox added.
Erkamps himself expressed excitement about joining the Steelers, citing the growth of hockey in the UK and the positive feedback he received from friends who have played in Sheffield. "I’ve been aware of the growth of hockey in the UK for some time and I’m really excited to be joining the Sheffield Steelers," he said. "I’ve spoken to friends who have played in Sheffield, including Kevin Tansey, Daniel Ciampini and Josh Nicholls, and every one of them told me I was making the right decision."
The Steelers' defensive group now boasts a blend of experience, mobility, and strength, with Erkamps set to make his debut at the Utilita Arena on August 30th, when the team hosts the Cardiff Devils in a pre-season clash. This strategic signing marks a significant step in the Steelers' preparation for the upcoming season, aiming to solidify their position as a competitive force in the Elite League.
